my OT story
I graduated in 1998 with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy from the University of Ulster and immediately began my career with the NHS at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust. During my time there, I gained broad experience in cancer care, stroke rehabilitation, and cardiology, before specialising in neurological conditions. I developed my expertise by working with patients from the acute stages of their neurological injuries in ITU through to their rehabilitation and reintegration at home.

To deepen my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals living with neurological conditions and their support networks, I took on a role as a case manager at Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust. In this position, I managed a diverse and complex caseload, advocating for individuals with disabilities and driving service development initiatives. One of my key passions that emerged from this role was supporting not just the individuals, but also the carers and families affected by disability—an area I continue to prioritise in my practice today.

After leaving the NHS in 2015, I transitioned to independent practice, where I have specialised as a neurological occupational therapist. I have substantial experience working with individuals with traumatic brain injuries, offering personalised assessments, goal planning, and rehabilitation services, all encapsulated in detailed, high-quality reports. I am particularly passionate about cognitive rehabilitation and developing fatigue management strategies tailored to each person’s unique environment and needs.

As an associate with various occupational therapy services, I have demonstrated creativity, autonomy, and excellent communication skills. I am also highly proficient in vocational rehabilitation, with the ability to explore the holistic impact of an individual’s condition on their productivity and quality of life.

I am proud to hold memberships in various specialist groups including specialist neurological section and independent practitioner section of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and am an active volunteer with Headway Sheffield, the charity that supports people with brain injuries and their families.
