my OT story
Hi, I’m Shelley, I qualified in 1996 with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy. I am a dedicated children’s occupational therapist with over 27 years of experience in both hospital and community settings. My passion lies in helping children improve their self-care, motor skills, sensory processing, develop their independence skills and overall improve their quality of life. I cover all areas of children’s occupational therapy, including complex assessments for neurological rehabilitation, housing adaptations, vehicle assessments and moving and handling. I work with the child, family, school and therapy team to deliver personalised therapy and support families and staff to ensure children get the care they need.
I started my career working in learning disabilities and spinal injuries across NHS Trusts in Scunthorpe, Wakefield, and Pontefract. From 2001, I led a team of children's occupational therapists at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust for nearly two decades before deciding to become independent in 2017. Now, I provide occupational therapy services as well as moving and handling training. Over the years, I’ve kept my skills current and evidence based through various training courses including MAES therapy, hippotherapy, sensory integration, Bobath and moving and handling, which help me provide the best intervention possible. I’m also proud to be a member of several professional and specialised bodies, including the RCOT, Yorkshire Back Exchange, Equine-facilitated Occupational Therapists, and the British Association of Bobath Trained Therapists.
Above all, I’m passionate about helping children achieve their full potential in all areas of their lives, at home and at school, in self care, productivity and play.
