my OT story
I qualified as an occupational therapist in 2007, initially working in a community long-term conditions team. I worked with adults with acquired and traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and long-term neurological conditions. My role involved providing physical and cognitive rehabilitation, as well as providing specialist equipment, assistive technology, and moving and handling. I developed and facilitated fatigue management groups, education groups, and cognitive rehabilitation groups, as well as developing newly diagnosed courses for adults with multiple sclerosis and parkinson’s disease. I am a goal focused occupational therapist who uses a variety of approaches to support my clients.
In 2013 I became a team leader for occupational therapists working with adults with neurological conditions in inpatient, outpatient, and community environments, and subsequently the service manager for a community neurological rehabilitation team. I acted as a source of expertise providing advanced therapy skills and experience in the supervision and support of other staff, in addition to carrying a caseload of complex clients.
In 2020 I began working as an advanced occupational therapist with children with special educational needs. Working within school environments, and in the community, I provided interventions for developing independence skills, rehabilitation programmes to enable children to engage in their education, postural management, assistive technology, and moving and handling. I have a passion for supporting families and planning for transition to adulthood.
Alongside my clinical work I work at Sheffield Hallam University teaching occupational therapy , and I also continue to provide clinical supervision for occupational therapists working with children with complex needs. Outside of my working life I am a governor at a local school, leading on the governance of special education needs and disabilities.
I am an innovative occupational therapist, with strong communication skills both verbally and in report writing. I am flexible and pragmatic, with a proven ability to work in challenging environments with adults and children. I understand the importance of developing working relationships with everyone involved in an adult or child’s care. I regularly receive positive feedback about my people skills, including being nominated for and winning an excellent practice award for ‘going above and beyond’.
I am HCPC registered and a member of RCOT. I have full liability insurance and an enhanced DBS for working with adults and children.
